Christmas at the Zoo

On Saturday evening, my wife and I stopped at the Indianapolis Zoo to check out Kroger’s Christmas at the Zoo. Besides thousands of Christmas lights and a model train exhibit at the White River Gardens, there’s another reason to visit the zoo this time of the year. The extended hours (the zoo is open until 9 pm) means that you can see something that you can’t see during the summer: nocturnal animals being active. Of course, this also means that all of the animals normally active during the day are asleep during these extended hours.
Other animals are off display because they can’t handle the winter weather, like the giraffes. If you take your children, you may want to prepare them for the possibility that their favorite animal may be asleep or off display for the winter, however I think the Christmas lights, model trains, active polar animals, and Christmas dolphin show will more than make up for this.
If you plan on visiting the zoo more than once a year (and you should), look into the purchase of a season pass. For most families, you save a significant amount of money by purchasing an annual family pass. And remember, besides providing great entertainment, a learning experience, and quality family time, the Indianapolis Zoo also funds important animal conservation research and is helping to combat the extinction of endangered species through their artificial insemination programs. Your zoo membership or gate fees help Indiana and the world.
So check out Christmas at the Zoo at the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens from Nov. 30-Dec. 30, 2007.
