Why don’t they have Boy Scout Cookies?

February 20th, 2008 Posted in Random Thoughts

Girl Scout CookiesEvery year, Girl Scouts around the country have an easy time raising funds for their troops because everyone loves Girl Scout Cookies.  People actually complain about waiting for their cookies and if they know a Girl Scout, they often bug her about when those darn cookies are coming out.

Personally, I love the thin mints and the peanut butter patties, and I don’t think my wife would turn down any kind of Girl Scout cookie they make.  There are plenty of people addicted to these things.

The question on my mind, and one that has bothered me since I was a Cub Scout many many years ago, is why don’t the Boy Scouts get to sell cookies or a similar product that everyone wants?  Instead, we always had to sell overpriced popcorn that wasn’t anything special.  Unlike the Girl Scouts, who have people beating down their door for those cookies, people only buy the Boy Scout popcorn out of a sense of obligation, not because it’s something they’re actually excited about.

After all these years, why are the Boy Scouts still peddling popcorn?  You’d think they could find a product that people could get behind like the Girl Scouts with their cookies, something that would be an easy sell.  If the Girl Scouts have a monopoly on cookies, why not some type of candy?  Team up with one of the better candy companies and come out with some addictive new chocolates.  Then only offer them once a year so people empty their wallets every time they come out like they do with the Girl Scout cookies.

The popcorn sale actually brings in pretty good money.

  2. Ryan Says:

Yah, but that’s more because people are buying it to support the Scouts than because it’s great stuff. People will buy anything to support their kids. My point is, why not give them something better to sell so they can make even more money?

With all this talk of boy scouts I have to ask are you gay Billy?

  4. Killer Says:

I wish they did very much. Imagine it the boy scouts trying to outsell girl scouts. And the prices will go right down. Note: that probably would never happen.

Mentor: No, so stop hitting on me already.

Kudos! I agree with you 100%. I loved selling the cookies-the popcorn selling sucks because it is way overpriced! My son and I broke down the $15.00 packs into $5.00 packs just to sell more. Economy is bad right now and people don’t want to spend $20.00 for a tin of popcorn they can get at Walmart for $5.00. I know because we have been out there hounding people and it’s no fun.
